I’ve always tried to post about “vegan” leather with a caveat that it’s still not ideal for the environment…it IS petroleum-based after all, but now, there’s an even bigger reason to forgo faux leather: lead. Thanks to a head’s up from Ethical Style & Planet Green, they’re reporting that lead has been found in certain faux-leather handbags by major brands (click here to download the full report).
None of the brands that I’ve regularly featured here are listed (like Matt & Nat, Deux Lux, etc.) are violators, but I’m still hesitant to continue to discuss “vegan leather” in the context of being “better” for the environment. It’s really not. There are plenty of other materials that make great handbags that ARE better for the environment to continue to promote faux leather. Like canvas:
Moop organic cotton canvas handbag – on sale for $90
Baggu X Shabd recycled cotton canvas – $58
Sophie canvas bag by ChristyStudio – $42
Pretty cute, no?

Moop! And Shabd! As fun to say as they are to look at.
Great post.

LOL…they ARE fun to say. i’d love that shabd backpack, trying to think of a way to justify it…
i have the moop market bag. but mine’s not organic. :S
oh, i’ve been obsessed with that bag forever. how do you like yours?
i like it very much. i have just moved on to something else, though, after 2 years.
i thought it was very stylish, but it seemed like i was the only one, since it didn’t catch compliments.
the cons for me are:
the strap is a little short for me to wear cross-body. but i am a giantess.
i could never find anything down at the bottom of the bag. there are pockets along the side, which are great, but you have to have good aim or you miss and the stuff falls to the bottom of the bag. and my iphone kept slipping out of the pockets. i wish they were secure. i sometimes wish the top would close somehow… and i wish you could tell one side of the bag from the other so you know which pocket to go into…
the bag is huge. i started to feel like i was enveloped by it or hiding behind it.
