There’s only one more day to shop the East + West Trunk Show at Olio United (ends 7/18)!! Featuring eco-friendly designers Bahar Shahpar, Emily Katz, Form & Fauna and Emily Baker, the trunk show is a great opportunity to snag some vegan shoes, super-cute skirts or lovely jewelry at a discount.

All week I’ve featured my favorite items by the trunk show designers, and last, but certainly not least, is Emily Baker, designer of Sword + Fern jewelry (we’re also giving away one of her necklaces – scroll down for details).

Emily has her hands in all kinds of art – she paints, drums, landscapes, and designs jewelry from recycled car parts. Yep, car parts, which actually lend themselves quite well to jewelry. At least the way Emily interprets them. (I’d love to know exactly what these 3/4 full “rings” actually are – they’re very cool!) Her jewelry has a great “industrial” edge to it, which I love, but can also be quite delicate – like the moon or the sun earrings.

Vegan shoes are getting easier to find all the time (especially online), but vegan AND cute shoes – not so much. They’re out there, but I still think a lot of the larger vegan/eco-friendly shoe lines (Payless, Simple, etc.) design more for function than for fun, and therefore neglect a large part of their potential market: the vegan woman who loves fashion (like me – and maybe you!).

Not so, Form and Fauna. Designed by a former yoga instructor, Form and Fauna shoes are as fashion-friendly as they are eco-friendly. Produced in the US, all the shoes are made from sustainable materials and the highest quality synthetics. No wonder they’re consistently featured as one of the better eco-footwear companies today!

Check out some of the most fashionable styles at the Olio United Trunk show this week, where they’re also marked down (until Saturday). My favorite pair is the Cleopatra wedge; how beautiful would these be with a lovely teal dress??

About the Trunk Show Designers:

Bahar Shahpar, New York City: Bahar Shahpar’s luxurious and sustainable womenswear line is smart, playful, and feminine- much like her customer. Her collection is a harmonious display of bold colors and prints, beautiful craftsmanship and design, and fine, earth-friendly fabrics.

Form and Fauna, San Francisco: Form and Fauna creates beautiful shoes from some of the highest quality sustainable materials, including organic cotton and hemp fabric, Italian synthetics, and second generation scrap wood. The collection is all handcrafted by artisans in the U.S.

Emily Katz, Portland: Emily Katz’ current eco-collection is an exhibition of simple, neutral colors and sexy, yet classy silhouettes. Her signature pieces include wrap dresses and oversized cowl neck tunic tops- staple pieces for the modern closet.

Sword and Fern, Portland: Inspired by everything from organic geometry and modern sculpture to the abundance of Pacific Northwest passages and forests, self-taught designer Emily Baker has created an eco-friendly collection of earrings and necklaces using cast off car parts, recycled glass, and found ephemera. The result is a classically futuristic aesthetic of elegant and clever sustainability.

If you haven’t checked out Olio United since their re-design, you MUST! They don’t have a lot of items back up yet, but they have added a great Portland Designer section with some AWESOME pieces by Heather Treadway. All of her pieces are handmade in Portland, and this Taos dress (my favorite) uses a reclaimed quilted panel at the top.

Must Have: Melissa Purple Slingbacks

by grechen on June 1, 2009 | SUBSCRIBE | TWITTER | FACEBOOK |

I’ve been singing the praises of Melissa shoes since I got my pair of Sin sandals last Summer. I was skeptical of plastic shoes from the beginning, but once I tried them, I was sold. Granted, mine are sandals, but all of Melissa’s shoes are perforated or airy so they breathe well enough not to get sticky and sweaty.

I am in LOVE with this color purple, and the perforated plastic on these recycled/recyclable slingbacks at Olio United:
