It’s Earth Day

And I’m conflicted. I’ve mentioned this dilemma before…but today, I’m just going to sit it out. Yes, there are TONS of coupon codes for amazing eco-boutiques and brands, but I really don’t want to contribute to the idea that Earth Day is another consumer holiday (which it is) by posting all of them. Today shouldn’t be different than any other day, we should think about how ethical and environmentally friendly the products we buy are EVERYDAY, not just on the “official” day. I really try to encourage that here at Green Grechen, but I feel like if I post all the sales and coupons, I’m just feeding into the hype. Know what I mean?

Stylish Vegan Clogs (really. and not crocs)

I love clogs. If you follow my other site, Grechen’s Closet, at all, you know this already. And I’m ecstatic that they’re back “in” style now because of all the options out there. Unfortunately, you cannot imagine how hard it was to find vegan clogs online that I’d actually wear. Or maybe you can. Sure, there are lots of vegan clog options out there, including the dreaded CROC, but I wouldn’t be caught dead or alive wearing any of them. I almost had to give up, but I did manage to find a few pairs of vegan “clogs” that are somewhat stylish (if only Swedish Hasbeens made a non-leather version of any of their clogs).

And just to clarify, my definition of a clog is a shoe with a wood sole & heel (NOT A WEDGE) and preferably with some sort of nails or staples fastening the upper to the sole. What exactly IS a clog is a definitely point of contention around the blogosphere lately, now that clogs are “in” – but I’m sticking to my guns on this one…

So…here goes! Let me know if you find any more stylish vegan clogs out there…

Ethical Wares

These vegan t-strap clog sandals are available at UK site Ethical Wares for approximately $92. They also have a couple of other pairs of decent-looking vegan clog sandals, although I do wish the heels were a bit higher on all of them. It would balance out the heavier styles in my opinion.

These could also be called a platform sandal, but according to my definition, they’re a clog. $31 at Lulu’s:

I’m sorry, but I actually think the heel on these is very ugly – but aside from that, the shoe isn’t bad…$29 at Alternative Outfitters:

Etsy turned out to be a good option for vegan clogs – all “vintage” or used at least…I found two pairs, one was sold out already, but this pair isn’t bad:

Sanita

I do still love a “classic” clog, either with a back or without, and Sanita makes a nice vegan option – but while I think this shoe is pretty to look at (the pattern, anyway), it’s hard to wear. Sanita does make a floral patterned high-heel sandal, but it’s lined with leather, so not appropriate here.

And I had to save the best, most stylish vegan clog/sandal for last – Stella McCartney:

Honestly, I think their prices are higher than other sample sale sites, but they have access to a lot of smaller designers you won’t see anywhere else, and some, I have to admit, that I haven’t heard of. The Best Faux Leather Jackets for (Stylish) Vegans

I have a love/hate relationship with leather jackets: I love them on others, but have never really liked them on me, and I definitely hate the price. Faux leather jackets are a good alternative, both in terms of price, and animal-friendliness, but I’ve really never been able to find many I’d even consider wearing. But now that eco-fashion is on par design and style-wise with conventional fashion, there are many more options available, and faux leather (polyurethane) is actually more eco-friendly than I thought:

Polyurethane faux leather is a greener alternative to PVC (vinyl) and leather. PVC contains chloride and does not biodegrade. It leaches toxic additives in landfills and emits carcinogenic dioxin when incinerated. Leather production is linked to large amounts of water pollution from waste, and the process of tanning uses numerous chemicals, including heavy metals. Naturally soft and flexible, polyurethane does not require the solvents used for softening PVC and leather. (from Brentano Fabrics)

(**edited** Unfortunately my favorite vegan leather jacket wasn’t really – the picture displayed on the website wasn’t the actual vegan jacket, it was the leather jacket. Oops. I’ve removed it from this list.)

Stella doesn’t always design in eco-friendly fabric, but she does maintain ethical business practices, and NEVER uses any animal products (except silk) in any of her pieces. I need a lot more off than 65% to be able to afford any Stella McCartney, but if you can afford to splurge, I’m not sure you’ll find any better prices on the new Fall collection…

Poll: Do you always BYOBag?

It’s just become habit for me now, but I always have my little BAGGU bag (thanks Candice) folded up in a pouch inside my purse, so I use it whenever I’m out: the bookstore, Saks, Sephora, the Gap, J Crew… Do you carry a reusable bag with you all the time? Or do you only use reusable bags for groceries? I could act all high & mighty and say that I NEVER use plastic bags or whatever, but the truth is I do get plastic bags at Target and reuse them as trash bags (haven’t bought trash bags in years). I mainly use reusable bags because they’re easier to carry, and I HATE having plastic and paper bags all over the house. Less waste, and better for the environment is good too
