Must Have: Bear Paw top from Flora & Fauna

by grechen on November 13, 2009 | SUBSCRIBE | TWITTER | FACEBOOK |

I don’t know why, but I have a thing for super-long sleeves with thumbholes – and I love that flora & fauna calls theirs “bear paws!” (the color-blocking is very cool too…)

florafauna

flora&fauna uses only organic and sustainable fabrics, produces all styles locally in Pauline’s hometown (Vancouver), and donates a portion of sales to different wildlife and conservation programs. Please check out the rest of the collection – there are also several nice pieces on sale.

HollyBeth Anderson had been making her own organic creams for years as a hobby, but it was upon her return to the US that HollyBeth became aware of all the chemicals and synthetic ingredients that were added to many beauty products. Finding companies that were truly natural became frustrating and HollyBeth recognized a place in the market for her handmade organic goodies. She approached local boutiques with samples of her homemade body creams and soon turned her passion into a business venture.

HollyBeth’s refreshing face and body products moisturize and pamper the skin in a gentle and pure manner. All products are made with certified organic therapeutic grade essential oils and are free from chemical preservatives and synthetic colorings, so you can be sure you are using the very best for your skin and for the environment.

HollyBeth’s Natural Luxury uses the highest quality ingredients available, seeking out local suppliers who farm their essential oils and plant extracts using environmentally conscious techniques. The company strives to create pure and natural products that nourish the body and soul. Each product is handcrafted in artisan size batches to ensure freshness and unmatched quality.

Constantly striving to educate the consumer about the health benefits of eco-friendly personal care, each and every product in the collection is made using certified organic and natural ingredients and packaging is 100% recyclable. HollyBeth believes in giving back and supports various local and global charities with proceeds.

**note from grechen: I’ve just seen that she’s based in Atlanta!! It’s kind of funny how now that I’m on my way out, I’m discovering new places to visit. I’m definitely going to try some of her lip balm and can just imagine how wonderful the candles smell!

Must Have: Plus Size Vintage Clothing

by grechen on November 12, 2009 | SUBSCRIBE | TWITTER | FACEBOOK |

I’m become more and more interested in vintage clothing lately, I love the idea of pre-loved clothing, the history of the pieces, and the thrill of the hunt. I haven’t actually done it yet for lack of time, but perhaps when I move to Austin, TX, I’ll explore some of the wonderful vintage shops there. Anyway, one of the things that does hold me back from vintage shopping is the fear of not being able to find anything in my size. I know that’s not necessarily accurate, but whenever I do browse some of my favorite online vintage boutiques, the pieces I love are WAY too small according to the measurements (I’m generally a size 12, but my hips are HUGE :) ) and since I don’t have any experience with vintage shopping, the task seems daunting.

To make it easier, though, LA Vintage has just added a “Plus Size” section filled with lovely dresses, tops & skirts:

Hayley, designer behind Green Grechen favorite, Heidi & Seek, let me know this morning that she’d relaunched her etsy site with all new designs and a new concept: instead of creating one-offs, she’s designed 5 styles in different colors & sizes (up to XL) so everyone can find one to fit their personal style and body. Everything is still made from reclaimed materials and she will be adding new styles every so often – so check back!!

Here are a few of my favorites:
